Today I Ate... [100102]

So, once again, I had ice cream from Bi-Rite Creamery. This is the fourth time this break and third time this week; I know, what's become of the health-conscious-conscious, right? To be honest, I'd probably throw my health out the window for this place, almost, maybe. Even before arriving, I had a craving for their Sam's Sundae. However, when we were maybe a block and a half away, I realized that I've already had the same sundae for more times this week than I thought necessary. I thought, "maybe I should give Sam a break, he's probably sick of my pugly mug."

So, I knew I wanted a sundae, but could not decide between the two that caught my eye: the brownie or the banana. Now, let me tell you something about myself: I used to find banana split sundaes disgusting, to the point of repulsion. Why, well, when you swiftly deliver that first spoonful of your average banana split onto your anxiously waiting taste buds, the copious amounts of canned whipped cream just overpowers the entire experience: you get an eight-to-two ratio of fat-filled air to anything else. I hated whipped cream and would immediately make a self-programmed u-turn every time it came within close proximity to my palette. The whipped cream served up by Bi-Rite, however, is nothing short of heavenly: a fresh, airy, almost guiltless quality in every bite. I have a feeling that if given the choice, I could eat that stuff with almost anything, sweet, even savory, haha.

Anyway, back to the review. Since I was already intimately familiar with Bi-Rite's whipped, and realizing that the only thing that had steered me away from trying banana splits was the usual canned whip fare, I decided to give myself the option of trying Bi-Rite's banana split. But I couldn't decide between my love for brownies and the spirit of trying something new. So, why not ask which the server preferred? So I did, to my delight. She probably sympathized with me as she offered to give me a two-for-one special, halving each sundae flavor and combining them to form a dual-delight. And so, I had a banana split on top of their chocolate ice cream and the brownie sundae on top of a scoop of vanilla, per my choice. Awesome. My impatient taste buds probably made the wait seem longer than it was, but every single millisecond of waiting was worth it for what I was about to see and taste.

The whole sundae was like a piece of art, golden caramelized bananas and brownie bits sitting over two generous scoops of ice cream, topped off with huge dollops of freshly whipped house cream and caramel/chocolate syrup zigzags accompanied by toasted walnuts and candied pecans. Damn, feast for not only my tummay, but my eyes as well! Talk about two-for-one. I first started with the brownie sundae: soft, crumbly, cocoa brownies over vanilla ice cream. I enjoyed the brownie bits, but wished that they were toasty or even warm to play off the coldness of the ice cream. I think I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream way more than the sundae for what it was. And then, on to the banana. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical when I dipped my spoon into the banana split portion, but as soon as I spooned that mass of bananasplit into my mouth, all skepticism was replaced by orgasmic delight. I could barely keep it in... my mouth. The slightly crisp layer of banana complimented the cold chocolate ice cream perfectly and the whipped made the whole experience that much more creamier and dreamier. The walnuts added a nice robust, toasty flavor to the mouthful, accentuating the texture of the single layer of candied banana with its own nutty crunch. And then you get this creamy banana aftertaste that dances around your mouth. Mmm, favorite. Nothing short of it.

I've had ice cream from Bi-Rite two days back-to-back now and I'm still hooked. Will I ever tire of the incredibly innovative and exotic flavors they consistently churn out? Will I ever be able to escape the inescapable money drain that is Bi-Rite Creamery?! I don't think so; at least not when they have such an inviting buy 10 get 1 free promo going on!
