Musing: Gluten

As of late, I've been watching more closely what I've been eating because of the paleo philosophy. I'd explain more about it, but it's a pretty hefty read. We'll save it for another post. For now, let's just shorten the philosophy to: natural, low-carb, high fat philosophy. Yay for simplicity!

Anyway, as I was finishing up my last lap of freestyle at the pool today, I felt my stomach rumble: HUNGER. The image of me sinking my teeth into the Granny Smith that was stowed in my bag quickly popped into my head. "Wait, this is going to be pure carbohydrates. Bullocks, I wish I could eat as much carby goodness as I wanted to. Bread, rice, CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES. But I know it's bad. Addictive, not good-for-you, bad." And because I was browsing a gluten-free inspired recipe site earlier in the morning, a rather perplexing question came to mind: what if I was allergic to gluten? WHAT IF I WAS ALLERGIC TO ALL THINGS CARBS?

Well, that would suck. I thought about how it would be like having gluten allergies, no bread, no brownies, NO CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES. But wait, that would fit incredibly well with the paleo lifestyle, cutting refined flour and sugar and all. So, what if I convinced myself that I was allergic to gluten by repeatedly rejecting anything and everything that contained gluten? Would that make a healthier lifestyle easier to manage? Or should I just stop complaining about the temptations gluten products give because I still have the option whereas some allergic individuals do not?
