I recall visiting a Ben & Jerry's scoop shop in San Francisco when I was an adolescent. Having spent most of my life in Hong Kong back then, my ice cream vocabulary consisted of: Haagen Dazs, Dreyer's, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, rainbow sorbet, and rum raisin (yeah, better believe it). I used to visit my aunt and cousins quite often, usually on weekends. On one random weekend, my aunt took my cousins and I to that fateful scoop shop, where I tasted their "most popular flavor," Cherry Garcia. I loved it. Bites full of rich chocolate chunks that gave a crunch in every bite perfectly balanced by the tangy sweet of the bing cherries. I had a single scoop on a cone, and remember wanting more. On our way out the store, I looked back and pondered when the next time I would come again. Little did I know, I would return to Hong Kong-land shortly after and never visit another scoop shop again.
Nice prologue, huh? On to the review!
Texture: creamy, light, almost fluffy! Neither the cherries or chocolate bits were as big as I had remembered. A quick google search revealed that they used to use bigger pieces of chocolate instead of the flakes they employ now. BUMMER. The flakes just didn't provide that satisfying crunch I remember so well...
Flavor: although the cherry ice cream wasn't as cough-syrupy-tasting as I thought it'd be, it wasn't as natural-tasting as I expected either. A tad bit too sweet and an ounce too chemical-tasting. You first taste the ice cream, then the tang of the cherries, and then the hint (only!) of chocolate rounding off the bite.
Overall: 4/10. Quite disappointed. Might have been biased, but the change made to the chocolate just didn't stand well with me...
Interesting fact from Wikipedia: For a month following the musician's (Jerry Garcia) death in 1995, the ice cream was made with black cherries instead of Bings as a show of mourning.

This flavor,
was my first & favorite flavor of B&J.
But now, I'd say it's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch - I don't recommend you try it. I think it may be too sweet for you. But if you're curious, I have a pint. :D
And yea, I remember the chocolate chunks. Too bad it's no more...
I thought we agreed no more ice cream for a while. :P
I've always been kind of wary of cherry flavored things because I don't like cough medicine. Maybe one day I'll work up the courage to try. :/
